StoryClub Games Girls Night Out Edition
March, 2010 (Daniel Island, SC)….Once upon a time some girlfriends needed an escape from life’s daily drama. Their white knight was StoryClub.
There is a hot new club in town. It’s been touted as ‘better than bunko’ and ‘much more fun than book club’. It’s called StoryClub games™, and it debuted last month with an inaugural Girls’ Night Edition. The concept is simple. Rather than reading someone else’s story and discussing it, StoryClubs write their own. “The idea started with a dream I had,” said Marcie Jacobs. “My book club couldn’t agree on which book to read. So, instead we decided to write our own story.” That dream turned into a vision of actual story clubs where groups of friends write stories together. After researching the idea she and friend, KC Kiner, outlined the process of how-to-play. “Obviously, we knew there was going to be a storybook included, as well as, some sort of ‘starter’ cards, character cards, and wild cards,” said Kiner. As the concept was fine tuned, the cards were separated into four decks and deemed Story Starters, People, Places, and Things. Once the first draft was written and handmade cards and a storybook put together, an email was sent inviting friends to a new kind of Girls’ Night.
Deceit, murder, romance and hilarity. There’s no telling where a StoryClub story will go! The first Girls’ Night StoryClub met last October. The concept not only worked, but it was great fun. Soon after that first StoryClub, graphic designer, Elyse Salamon, joined the team and began making StoryClub games™ look fun, fresh and pretty. Meanwhile, Jacobs and Kiner began researching U.S. manufacturers and negotiated with vendors to get this first edition produced and applied for the proper trademarks and copyrights. In addition, an article in the NY Times solidified their thoughts regarding the possible success of Storyclub. “It stated that since 9/11 book clubs have been on the rise with an estimated four to five million as an affordable way to stay connected,” said Jacobs.
The original Daniel Island group met again in November and then had a big holiday themed StoryClub in December. Not only was each meeting a success, it also gave Jacobs and Kiner more ideas to fine-tune the concept. After months of tweaking and editing, the first edition of StoryClub Games is now available at storyclubgames.com. The original StoryClub on Daniel Island continues to enjoy Girls’ Night, and their stories just might earn them a best seller one day…even if it’s in their own minds!
Next on the agenda for StoryClub games™? The company has already begun writing a Family edition, Couple’s edition, and Kid’s edition that they hope will be used in schools as a tool to help improve writing skills. “We have loads of ideas for StoryClub. Our hope is to be able to offer something for everyone because it’s not only fun, but it’s a terrific way to connect with others.”

While having breakfast in randys cafe -Palm Desert,Calif- the games were there . Couldn’t resist buying it,and by the way not a bad price, because I’m a tad bored with the whole book-club gig–but not my girlfriends! I hosted last month and we played and had a BALL! Lots of laughs and though its not a win or lose kind of game,we ALL were winners.I passed it on to the next hostess and we can’t wait to play it again. It is turning out to be our gift to give this year– Good luck to the creators!!
I had the pleasure of starting StoryClub in Barcelona, Spain with an international group of gals. We had SO much fun, and got SO carried away that we did not get past the 2nd chapter! Hope it continues without me…
