Members Corner – Robyn – ESRB Game Ratings iPhone App
Here’s a post from Robyn about one of her favorite apps, and how she uses it to be sure the games she chooses for her children aren’t inappropriate.
While you are shopping wouldn’t it be nice to get more info on the video games the kids are asking for? ESRB – the folks that rate the games – have developed a new iPhone app so you can search the name of the game and get the rating and also detailed info on what the game is and why it is rated as such. The images here are screen shots from the app on my iPhone.
The ESRB ratings on the back of the video game boxes are a good guide to start with on picking games for kids, but with the iPhone app you get even more detail. While I have delegated Hubby to the decider of what games Taylor can play or not, occasionally I still shop for games and want to know about them. Plus Hubby and I usually shop together so he can borrow my iPhone now to use this app to find out more info when Taylor asks for a game or wants to buy one with his own money. Even if we are just renting games this can come in really handy since sometimes the rental places don’t have the original boxes to read on.
The app is free and easy to use. Open it up, type in the game title and click search. It will bring up the choices that fit and you select the exact game on the exact system you are looking for. It will display the rating plus give you detailed information about the game so you can make a more informed decision on what is right for your family. Included is also a Ratings Guide which explains the different rating symbols and other ESRB information. The app provides ratings for over 18,000 games – anything rated since 7/1/08 has the summary included! Download it now and be an informed consumer!
